Why Trou aux Biches

More charter boats work out of Trou aux Biches than any other port in Mauritius. For a visitor that means two practical things: you have a real choice of boat and price rather than taking whatever is free, and if the weather closes one skipper down there is usually another sailing.

The port sits on the northwest coast, which is the sheltered side for most of the year. The reef pass is close, and the drop off is a short run beyond it, so a six hour trip here spends more of its time fishing and less of it steaming than the same trip from a port further from deep water. Staying at Pointe aux Biches, the village just south of here on the coast road to Pointe aux Piments? It is the same stretch of coast, and these are your nearest boats.

What a trip looks like

Boats here range from small coastal craft taking four guests to larger vessels carrying seven, so the port covers both a family morning and a serious offshore day.

Two broad styles are on offer. Inside and along the reef, bottom fishing and light tackle work for reef species, which suits families and first timers. Beyond the pass, trolling the drop off targets wahoo, yellowfin tuna, dorado and, in season, blue marlin.

The reef edges here are also serious giant trevally country. GT fishing is a different proposition from a relaxed family trip: hundreds of casts with heavy gear, and an explosive strike if it comes. We wrote about what that is really like in GT fishing in Mauritius.

Before you book

  • Check whether a quote is per boat or per person. Here it is almost always per boat, which catches people out when comparing.
  • Ask when the hours start. Some skippers count from the berth, some from the fishing grounds.
  • Agree what happens to the catch before the day, not after. Practice varies between boats.
  • Book near where you are staying. A cheaper boat an hour down the coast stops being cheaper once you add the taxi.
