In Mauritius, yellowfin tuna fishing is at its peak in March, April, May, October, November and December. Yellowfin tuna are the hardest pulling fish most guests hook off Mauritius: they swim in schools in the deep blue water outside the reef, and the boats here find them by trolling, by watching for birds over bait and around the fish aggregating devices moored offshore.

Other fish to target in Mauritius
How yellowfin are fished here
Mauritius is ringed by a coral reef, and the water outside it drops into deep ocean within minutes of the pass. Yellowfin tuna hunt that open water in schools, often under diving birds where bait has been pushed to the surface, and they gather around floating objects, including the fish aggregating devices, or FADs, that are moored off the coast.
Most tuna are hooked trolling: the crew runs a spread of lures behind the boat and hands you the rod when a fish takes. A yellowfin does not jump like a mahi mahi. It dives and runs, and a good one can keep you busy for a long time. Some boats also jig or cast poppers to a school once it is found, which is the more active way to fish for them.
Tuna trips often bring other fish too. The same lures take mahi mahi, wahoo and, in the warm months, blue marlin.
Which boat for tuna
- Big Game Fishing in Rivière Noire, on the west coast, names large tuna first: yellowfin, bluefin and bigeye, along with blue and black marlin and sailfish. Two specialised skippers come out with you to help or to teach the method.
- Last Cast in Grand Baie fishes tuna schools, marlin grounds and FADs, for small groups of two to four, with Captain Belon and his first mate Pravin.
- Pyramide in Trou-aux-Biches is run by skipper Mike Seblin and his brother Hansley, with heavy and light tackle for trolling, jigging and popping. The listing says you and the crew each keep one fish under 10 kilograms.
- Fishing on Ivan in Trou-aux-Biches shapes trips of 4 to 9 hours around the fish you ask for, tuna included, on a 36 foot boat with a fighting chair and a toilet.
- Flying Kiss in Pointe aux Piments leaves at 5:30 and is back at 12:00, with dorado, tuna and marlin on its list and room for a bigger group.
The other boats on this page, in Trou-aux-Biches and Grand Baie, troll the same water.
When to come
Yellowfin are caught off Mauritius all year, and the most reliable months are roughly March to July, when schools come closer to the island with the bait. Go in the morning, when the sea is calmest before the trade wind builds. Our Mauritius fishing seasons guide has the month by month picture.
What to ask before you book
- Trolling only, or can we jig and pop? If you want to cast to a school, ask whether the boat carries the gear.
- Do we keep any tuna? On many Mauritius charters the catch stays with the boat. Our guide on who keeps the fish explains the usual arrangements.
- How long is the trip? Tuna can be well offshore, so a longer trip gives the crew more water to search.
