Wahoo charters by country

In mid October, Tuna Wahoo Fishing Charters trolled out of West Palm Beach for wahoo, put a good one in the boat, then drifted the reef for a couple of snappers. Captain Rich Adler runs a 31 foot Rampage from Riviera Beach Marina, wheelchair-accessible, on trips of 4, 6 or 8 hours from 7:30 am for up to 5.

A wahoo is a long, narrow relative of the mackerels, barred blue and silver, with a mouth full of razor teeth. It hunts alone or in small groups along drop-offs and around floating cover in warm seas the world over, and crews rig wire or heavy leaders so it cannot bite through the line. The firm white flesh explains the Hawaiian name, ono, which means delicious.

Winter wahoo trolling off Palm Beach County

Sport Fishing South Florida fishes all year, and for wahoo in the winter months the captain strongly recommends the trolling trip, with rigged ballyhoo, strip baits and split-tail mullet. Wahoo take the live baits on the kite too, sometimes leaping high out of the water with the bait. Trips run 3 to 8 hours from 7 am for up to 6, and our wahoo in the United States page has more on this coast.

Questions and answers

Short answers to what people ask before they book. Anything else, ask the captain in chat.

What is the best way to catch a wahoo off Florida?

Trolling. Sport Fishing South Florida calls it the best method for wahoo at any time of year and recommends a trolling trip in winter, with rigged ballyhoo, strip baits and split-tail mullet. Wahoo also take live baits fished from a kite.

When is wahoo season in Mauritius?

Our Mauritius wahoo page puts the peak in the cooler months, June to September. Wahoo come on the same offshore troll as tuna and mahi mahi, from Trou-aux-Biches, Cap Malheureux, Pointe aux Piments and Rivière Noire.

Why do crews use wire leaders for wahoo?

Wahoo have rows of razor-sharp teeth that slice through ordinary monofilament, often on the strike itself. A short wire or heavy leader in front of the lure keeps the fish on long enough for you to bring it to the boat.
