Yellowfin tuna charters by country
Big yellowfin grow long, sickle-shaped yellow fins and carry a golden stripe down the flank. They feed on flying fish, squid and small fish, often under diving birds or around anything floating, and a hooked one turns and bores straight down instead of jumping. The red flesh is the tuna of sashimi; in Hawaii it is called ahi.
Popping and jigging for yellowfin in the Seychelles
If you would rather work for a tuna than wait for the troll, look at Guided Fishing Trips from Victoria. The crew fishes its own handmade topwater lures and high-speed jigs, on 8 hour full days or 5 hour half days from 6 am, for up to 4. Their April 2026 report, from a six-day liveaboard with five anglers, puts yellowfin at the top: plenty of 10 to 15 kg fish and at least 50 released, mostly on the jig, with dogtooth tuna, amberjack and several groupers alongside.
Ten boats are in Mauritius, where yellowfin share the offshore troll with mahi mahi and marlin; our yellowfin tuna in Mauritius page covers the months and methods. Trou-aux-Biches has most of them: Pyramide and La Rochelle from 4 am, Big game fishing for one angler from 5, Fishing on Ivan from 5:30, Baywatch from 6 to about noon, and Yan from 9. In Grand Baie, Last Cast takes two to four on a Baymaster 215 to the tuna schools and FADs, and the Full Day Trip stays out nine hours. Flying Kiss sails from Pointe aux Piments at 5:30, and Big Game Fishing in Rivière Noire names large tuna as its main target, jigging and popping on a 4 hour trip.
Off Honolulu the two Ohana boats troll for ahi from 6 am, for 4, 6 or 8 hours: Iwa Kai, a 74 foot Striker for up to 12, and Reel Life, a Viking sportfisher for up to 6. From MalΓ©, Full Day Fishing Trips in Maldives goes out at 6:30 for 4 or 8 hours, offshore or onto the reef.
Questions and answers
Short answers to what people ask before they book. Anything else, ask the captain in chat.
Is ahi the same fish as yellowfin tuna?
Yes. Ahi is the Hawaiian name, and in Honolulu it usually means yellowfin, though bigeye are sold as ahi too. The Iwa Kai crew lists ahi alongside mahi mahi, ono and marlin.
Can I fish for yellowfin with jigs and poppers?
Yes. Guided Fishing Trips in the Seychelles fishes mostly with high-speed jigs and its own topwater lures. In Mauritius, Big Game Fishing in Rivière Noire jigs and pops for tuna, and Last Cast in Grand Baie carries jigging and popping gear.
Do I get to keep a yellowfin?
It depends on the boat. Reel Life in Honolulu lets guests take home half the catch, up to 50 lb, cleaned and filleted. On Pyramide in Mauritius you and the crew each keep one fish under 10 kg. On the Seychelles liveaboard many tuna were released.
