Giant Trevally Fishing Charters

Browse guided giant trevally fishing trips and charters worldwide on Reelzy. The heavyweight of the reef, the giant trevally smashes a popper in a burst of white water and then tries to cut the line on the coral. Our GT boats cast from Mahebourg in Mauritius and Victoria in Seychelles.

Updated

GT, as everyone calls it, is the largest of the trevallies. It hunts fish and octopus along reef edges, channel mouths and surf-washed drop-offs, and hits a topwater lure harder than almost anything else that swims. The fight is short and brutal: the fish turns for the reef, and heavy line and a locked drag have to stop it before the coral does the cutting. Most GT anglers photograph their fish and release it.

A morning of popping off Mahebourg

Giant Trevally Popping is six hours of casting from 06:00 off southeast Mauritius, for up to 4, guided by the popping specialist Olivier Julien with an experienced captain at the wheel. Poppers, gear and drinks are on board, and you are welcome to bring your own rod and reel; bring your own food. Offshore runs depend on the weather. The day is repetitive by design, cast after cast of hard working retrieves, so it suits anglers who are fit and patient. The best months for GT in Mauritius are October to March, and our post on GT fishing in Mauritius covers the season and the effort involved.

In Seychelles, the guided trips from Victoria put topwater fishing first, with lures the crew makes themselves, over reefs, flats and wrecks, for up to 4 on 5 or 8 hour days from 06:00. Tell them a GT is your target and the day can lean towards the reef edges rather than the jigging grounds.

Questions and answers

Short answers to what people ask before they book. Anything else, ask the captain in chat.

When is GT season on the Mahebourg popping trip?

The best months for giant trevally in Mauritius are October to March. Offshore fishing on the Mahebourg trip depends on the weather, so leave a spare day in your holiday in case the sea is too rough on the first date.

Should I bring my own popping rod for GT?

You do not have to, since both boats supply gear and the Mahebourg crew provides poppers. Olivier Julien's trip does welcome your own rod and reel, which many experienced GT anglers prefer because they know how their outfit handles a hard run.
