Mahi mahi charters by country

Mahi mahi live in warm open ocean and gather under anything that floats: weed lines, logs, buoys and the fish aggregating devices (FADs) many island fleets anchor offshore. They grow very fast and feed on flying fish, small tunas and squid. Bulls have a tall, square forehead; females a rounded one. Hooked, they jump and run, and a lit-up fish beside the boat shows colours, gold, green and electric blue, that fade within minutes of landing. Most are caught trolling lures or rigged baits, and when one bites, others often follow it to the boat, so a crew may keep the hooked fish in the water and cast to the rest of the school.

Honolulu is the Pacific end of the page. Reel Life, a Viking sportfisher for up to 6, and Iwa Kai, a 74 foot Striker for up to 12, both leave Kewalo Basin Harbor at 06:00 on 4, 6 or 8 hour private trolling trips. On Reel Life you can take home half the catch, up to 50 lb, cleaned and filleted.

Florida's two boats fish the Gulf Stream off Palm Beach County. Sport Fishing South Florida trolls rigged ballyhoo, strip baits and split tail mullet for mahi and does most of its trolling in spring and summer; Tuna Wahoo Fishing Charters runs from Riviera Beach Marina at 07:30. Our mahi mahi in the United States page has more.

Mauritius has the most boats, and our season guide gives November to January as the best dorado months. Last Cast, a Baymaster from Grand Baie, names the FADs among its grounds; also in the north are the Grand Baie full day and ti bato at Cap Malheureux. Trou-aux-Biches has Fishing on Ivan, Pyramide, La Rochelle, Baywatch, One and only, Yan and Big game fishing, and Flying kiss sails from Pointe aux Piments. The detail is on dorado in Mauritius. Further north, Tide Explorer trolls from Male and Guided Fishing Trips from Victoria in the Seychelles.

In Malta mahi mahi are lampuki, the autumn fish of Fishingmalta, whose skippers run 10 to 20 miles out for them on some days and find them closer on others, Aquaholic and Adele II; see lampuki in Malta. In Spain, La Starfisher in Málaga, Pesca a fondo in Cádiz and a Las Palmas reef trip list them, covered on dorado in Spain.

Questions and answers

Short answers to what people ask before they book. Anything else, ask the captain in chat.

Can I keep the mahi mahi I catch on these charters?

It depends on the boat. On Reel Life in Honolulu guests take home half the catch, up to 50 lb, cleaned and filleted. On Pyramide in Mauritius you and the crew each keep one fish under 10 kg. Ask each crew before you book, because rules on sharing the catch differ.

Why do Mauritius boats look for FADs when trolling for dorado?

Mahi mahi gather under floating objects, and fish aggregating devices anchored offshore hold bait and the predators that follow it. Last Cast in Grand Baie names FADs among its grounds. Working the FADs is the usual way to look for dorado in the November to January season.

Which boat suits a big group after mahi mahi?

Iwa Kai in Honolulu takes up to 12 on a 74 foot Striker with air conditioning and a galley, and Flying kiss in Pointe aux Piments also takes 12. Aquaholic in St Paul's Bay, Malta, takes up to 12 on trips of 4 to 8 hours.
