The reef around Mauritius drops into deep ocean a short run from the pass, and wahoo patrol that drop off and the open water beyond it. They hit a lure at full speed, often with a run that strips line off the reel before anyone has picked up the rod, so the strike is the moment most guests remember.
Almost every wahoo is taken trolling: the crew sets a spread of lures from the outriggers and hands you the rod when a fish takes. Their teeth cut through ordinary line, which is why the crews rig wire or heavy leaders for them. Wahoo rarely come alone on the troll. The same lures and water also take yellowfin tuna, mahi mahi and, in the warm months, blue marlin.
