One name, several fish

In the Mediterranean and the eastern Atlantic a bonito is the Atlantic bonito, a slim tuna with dark stripes slanting across its back and small sharp teeth, which true tunas lack. It chases sardines and anchovies near the surface and is very good eating if bled and iced at once. In Florida the fish called bonito is usually the little tunny, and around the Indian Ocean the word often means skipjack or another small tuna. All of them pull far harder than their size suggests, and all are caught the same way: lures trolled fast, or metal cast into a breaking school.

Mauritius has the most boats, and our season guide puts bonito at their best there from November to February. At Trou-aux-Biches, Fishing on Ivan names bonito among its targets, with Captain Sebastian on a 36 foot boat from 05:30, lunch included. The same bay has Pyramide, out at 04:00, La Rochelle, Baywatch, One and only and Yan. Flying kiss sails from Pointe aux Piments for groups of up to 12, and Small Game Fishing casts and light trolls from Mahebourg, the lightest tackle on this page. More on bonito in Mauritius.

Elsewhere in the Indian Ocean, Tide Explorer fishes from Male and Guided Fishing Trips from Victoria in the Seychelles. Off Florida, Sport Fishing South Florida trolls the Gulf Stream off Palm Beach County.

In Malta, Aquaholic sails from St Paul's Bay with Captain Paul, a commercial fisherman, alongside Fishingmalta, Hooked Malta and Adele II; see bonito in Malta. Spain has Blue Tide in Marbella, trolling and spinning on 3 to 8 hour trips, La Starfisher in Málaga, Pesca a fondo in Cádiz and a reef trip from Las Palmas, all on our bonito in Spain page.

Bonito are rarely the whole plan. They keep the reels busy between bigger strikes, and a school can wake up a slow morning, so ask the crew to keep a light spinning rod rigged in case one shows close to the boat.

Questions and answers

Short answers to what people ask before they book. Anything else, ask the captain in chat.

Is a bonito in Mauritius the same fish as a bonito in Spain?

Not always. In Spain and Malta the name means the Atlantic bonito, a striped, toothy small tuna. In Mauritius and around the Indian Ocean it is often used for skipjack or other small tunas, and in Florida for the little tunny. Ask the crew what they mean by it.

When are bonito at their best in Mauritius?

Our Mauritius season guide gives November to February as the best months for bonito. They come as part of a mixed catch on the offshore trolling trips from Trou-aux-Biches and Pointe aux Piments, and the crew will tell you what has been running before your date.

Which boat suits someone who wants light tackle bonito fishing?

Small Game Fishing in Mahebourg is the light tackle trip on this page, casting and light trolling for up to 4 on 4 or 6 hours from 06:00. In Marbella, Blue Tide trolls and spins on trips from 3 to 8 hours with rods, tackle and bait supplied.
