European Seabass Fishing Charters

Spanish menus call it lubina, French ones bar or loup, and much of what restaurants serve is farmed. The wild fish is grey-green on the back, bright silver below, with a spiny first dorsal fin and a gill cover sharp enough to cut a careless finger. It feeds in the roughest shallow water a boat can work, over reefs, along sandbanks and in river mouths, on sandeels, small fish and crabs, and it grows slowly, which is why so many anglers keep one and put the rest back.

Spain is a different picture. Pesca a fondo runs private four hour trips from Cádiz at 09:00 for up to 6, a family day with plenty of bites and every method from bottom fishing to spinning. The Atlantic coast around Cádiz is real bass water, but here lubina is a fish you may meet among gilt-head bream, pandora and bonito; say so when you book if you want a go with lures. Bottom fishing 6 hours in Las Palmas is a reef trip off Gran Canaria for amberjack and snapper, and bass are not a Canary Islands fish to count on.
