Bluefin Tuna Fishing Charters

Browse guided bluefin tuna fishing trips and charters worldwide on Reelzy. Atlantic bluefin are the largest of the tunas, warm-bodied ocean travellers that pour through the Strait of Gibraltar into the Mediterranean every year. Where you can fish for one, and if you can keep it, depends on each country's rules.

Bluefin tuna charters by country

A bluefin keeps its body warmer than the sea around it, which lets it hunt mackerel, herring, sardines and squid in cold water and swim at speed for days. The adults move into the Mediterranean in late spring to spawn and leave again over the summer, and that passage is what the boats of the Strait and Malta fish. The species is managed under an international quota, every country sets its own recreational rules inside it, and a great many trips are catch and release. On the boat it is heavy tackle work: a long fight on stand-up gear, with the crew steering the boat to keep the line clear.

Gibraltar's two bluefin windows

Blue Horizon Tuna Fishing is the boat on this page built for bluefin and nothing else, on 4 or 8 hour private trips from 06:00 for up to 4. The crew give two windows: giant bluefin from 16 June to 16 July, their prime season, and smaller fish from 16 August to 16 October, which come and go in bursts, so they advise on dates. Rods, reels and lures are supplied, and full days carry fuel, snacks and soft drinks. How Gibraltar runs its own season and quota is in our bluefin tuna season in Gibraltar guide.

In Malta, Hooked Malta is a tuna boat first: Capt. Nigel runs a 25 foot Ranieri Evo from Gżira for up to 5, on 4 hour trips from 09:00, fishing dead bait on big game tackle with children welcome from about 10. Mister Fish Charters in Marsascala also lists bluefin and carries heavy tackle. Our guide to a bluefin trip in Malta and how catch and release works covers the day.

On the Spanish side, La Faeton Blue Marlin and La Starfisher on the Málaga coast and Pesca a fondo in Cádiz list bluefin because the fish pass through their water. Our bluefin tuna in Spain page explains the authorisation a boat needs and why the 2026 season closed early.

One more boat lists bluefin, and here it pays to ask before you book. Kestrel Warrior runs 2 hour shared trips in East Sussex, and its November 2025 report speaks of hoping for tuna on a later trip: a hope, not a tuna charter. Bluefin do reach the English Channel in late summer and autumn, but in UK water they may only be fished catch and release from a licensed charter boat.
