Bigeye tuna charters by country
The big eye is there for a reason. Bigeye tuna spend the daylight hours deeper than most other tunas, rising towards the surface at night and around dawn, and young ones swim mixed in with yellowfin and skipjack around floating objects and FADs. The first bigeye you see can look like a plump yellowfin. The meat is rich and fatty, which is why bigeye is one of the most prized tunas for sashimi.
Three Mauritius boats list it. Big Game Fishing in Rivière Noire is the one that names bigeye as a target, alongside yellowfin tuna and the marlins. It is a 4 hour trip at 09:00 for up to 4, built around jigging and popping, with two skippers on board to help you or teach you the method. Other jigging trips in Mauritius work the deep water the same way.
On the north coast, Last Cast fishes out of Grand Baie on a Baymaster 215 with Captain Belon and his first mate Pravin, for 2 to 4 people. It leaves at 05:00 for 4, 6 or 8 hours and works tuna schools, marlin grounds and FADs, with trolling, jigging and popping gear on board. Catch and cook or a barbecue on an island can be arranged on request, so ask for it when you book if you want to eat your tuna the same day.
Pyramide leaves Trou-aux-Biches at 04:00 for 6 or 10 hours with a live bait pump, outriggers and a fighting chair. Each guest keeps one fish under 10 kg, which is worth knowing before you hope to take a big tuna home. The boats are also on the bigeye tuna in Mauritius page.
Questions and answers
Short answers to what people ask before they book. Anything else, ask the captain in chat.
How do you tell a bigeye tuna from a yellowfin?
A bigeye has a noticeably larger eye, a rounder, deeper body and, on adult fish, shorter second dorsal and anal fins than a big yellowfin. Small fish are hard to separate because both feed together around FADs, so ask the crew to show you once the fish is on board.
Can I eat a bigeye tuna I catch on these boats?
Last Cast in Grand Baie offers catch and cook or an island barbecue on request, so you can eat it the same day. On Pyramide each guest keeps one fish under 10 kg. On the Rivière Noire trip, agree what happens to the catch with the skippers before you leave.
