On an Indian Ocean reef this is the trevally after the giant: smaller, quicker and far more colourful. Bluefin patrol reef edges, channels and shallow flats in small groups, sometimes shadowing a larger hunter to snap up whatever it flushes from the coral. A popper splashed along the reef edge is the classic way to catch one; a small stickbait or jig works too. Most are released.
Popping the reef edge off Mahebourg
Giant Trevally Popping from Mahebourg is six hours of nothing but popping from 06:00, for up to 4, with the popping specialist Olivier Julien and an experienced captain. Giant trevally are the target, and bluefin hit the same lures on the same reefs. Poppers, gear and drinks are on board; bring snacks or lunch, and your own rod if you have a favourite. Offshore fishing depends on the weather.
In Seychelles, the Victoria guided trips put topwater first, with hand made lures, and fish flats and reefs as well as deep water: up to 4 anglers, 06:00 starts, 5 or 8 hours.
Last Cast from Grand Baie is an offshore big game boat for 2 to 4 that carries popping gear, so a bluefin can turn up on a reef stop, but it is not what Captain Belon goes out for.
