Snook charters by country
Snook live where salt and fresh water meet and push a long way up rivers and canals, lying in the shade of mangroves, docks and bridges and waiting for bait to drift past. They do not like the cold, and a sharp cold snap moves them and puts them off the bite. A good one jumps, shakes its head and heads for the nearest roots, and the edge of its gill cover is sharp enough to cut a light leader. Snook are also one of the best eating fish in Florida, which is why the state protects them closely.
Casting the backcountry from Weston
Swampdog Tours is our snook boat, a 22 foot Carolina Skiff run by Capt. Jonathan out of Weston for up to 6. Snook are on his list of target fish. Most snook fishing here is accurate casting: spinning lures or a popper put tight to cover, worked back, then put in again a few feet along. Rods, reels, lures and live bait come with the boat, and fly fishing is on offer too.
The six hour trip from 06:30 gives you the most casts and starts at first light, when snook are often at their most willing. The 07:00 trips run two or four hours. Snook have their own closed seasons and size rules in Florida, so expect to release most of them and ask the captain what can be kept on your date. You buy your Florida licence before the trip; our post on fishing regulations in Florida has the background.
Questions and answers
Short answers to what people ask before they book. Anything else, ask the captain in chat.
Can you keep a snook caught on a Swampdog Tours trip?
Sometimes, but plan on releasing most. Florida protects snook with closed seasons and size rules, and some species need extra permission to keep. Ask Capt. Jonathan what applies on your date before the trip.
Which Swampdog Tours trip is best for snook?
The six hour trip from 06:30 gives the longest spell of casting and starts at first light, when snook often feed hard near cover. A two or four hour trip from 07:00 suits a shorter morning or a boat with children on it.
