Herring Fishing Charters

Browse guided herring fishing trips and charters worldwide on Reelzy. Herring are bait more often than quarry: small, silver, shoaling fish that live on plankton and, in turn, feed almost every predator in the sea.

Updated

The Atlantic herring itself is a cold-water fish of the North Atlantic and the North Sea. Its family is far wider, and in the warmer Mediterranean the shoals of that family are mostly sardines and sardinella. These are fish for light lines and small hooks, and on a charter they matter mainly because the bigger fish follow them: a fresh, oily baitfish is one of the best things to put on a hook for a dentex or an amberjack.

One of our boats lists herring, in Malta, and it does not build a trip around it.

In Malta, Aquaholic Fishing Charter sails from St. Paul's Bay with Captain Paul, a commercial fisherman who knows the coast well. Laguna II takes up to 12 on a private trip from 09:00 lasting four to eight hours, bottom fishing reefs and wrecks.

Want to catch your own bait before the main fishing? Ask Captain Paul if there is time for it on your day. Small shoaling fish on light lines also make a good first catch for children.

Questions and answers

Short answers to what people ask before they book. Anything else, ask the captain in chat.

Does the St. Paul's Bay charter catch herring?

Herring turn up as small shoaling fish and bait rather than as a target. Aquaholic in St. Paul's Bay lists them, but its trips are built around bottom fishing on reefs and wrecks for bigger fish.

Can you catch your own bait on a St. Paul's Bay trip?

Ask when you book. Aquaholic runs private trips from 09:00 lasting four to eight hours, so Captain Paul can spend some time on small shoaling fish for bait if the sea and the plan for the day allow it.
