Red grouper charters by country

The fish is brick red to brown with pale blotches, broad and big in the head, and it lives over rocky bottom and ledges, waiting for crabs, shrimp and small fish to come past. Hook one and the first few seconds decide it, because a grouper's instinct is to bolt for its hole and wedge itself in. The meat is white, firm and mild, which is why a grouper sandwich is on so many menus in Florida. Red grouper are most plentiful on the Gulf side of the state and less common along the Atlantic coast.

Grouper on the Palm Beach reefs and wrecks

Sport Fishing South Florida names snapper and grouper among its target fish alongside the Gulf Stream species, and fishes reefs and wrecks as well as open water. For grouper that means getting a bait or a jig down to the bottom: the crew offers vertical jigging, which takes strength and stamina, and puts a live bait down deep in its spread. Trips are private for up to 6, leaving at 7:00, with lengths from 3 to 8 hours. Ask for a longer trip if you want time on the bottom as well as the surface. Florida has its own grouper rules, covered in our guide to fishing regulations in Florida.

Questions and answers

Short answers to what people ask before they book. Anything else, ask the captain in chat.

Does a Palm Beach County trip fish for red grouper?

Sport Fishing South Florida lists grouper and snapper among its targets on the reefs and wrecks off Palm Beach County. Grouper need a bait or jig on the bottom, so tell the captain when you book and choose a trip long enough to leave time for bottom fishing.

What else comes up when you bottom fish off Palm Beach?

On the reefs and wrecks Sport Fishing South Florida fishes, mutton snapper and amberjack live on the same ground as grouper, and both are on the boat's species list. Bull sharks hang around there too and often take a hooked fish on the way up, which is one more reason the crew winds a grouper in fast.
