If you are staying in Pointe aux Piments, you can fish from your own stretch of coast or from Trou-aux-Biches, the next village north, where most of the north-west fleet keeps its boats. One charter on Reelzy is based in Pointe aux Piments itself, and seven more sail from Trou-aux-Biches, a short drive up the coast road. Expect an early start, a morning on the troll outside the reef and a return around midday.
The short answer
Pointe aux Piments is a quiet hotel village on the north-west coast of Mauritius, between Trou-aux-Biches to the north and Balaclava to the south. FishingBooker even groups it with Balaclava as one fishing location. There is no big marina here. Boats work off the beach and small moorings, and most trips that advertise “Pointe aux Piments” start either at the boat’s own spot on this coast or at Trou-aux-Biches, with a hotel pickup or a short transfer.
So the real question for a guest is not “is there a charter here” but “which boat on this coast suits my group, and where do I meet it”.
Where the boats actually leave from
You have two options, and both are close.
From Pointe aux Piments. Flying Kiss is listed on Tagore Line in Pointe aux Piments. It is the only boat on Reelzy with its base in the village, and its page is the one to read first if you want to step out of the hotel and onto the boat with no transfer.
From Trou-aux-Biches. The next village north is where the north-west fleet concentrates: there are seven live fishing charters in Trou-aux-Biches on Reelzy. Evendo’s directions for one of them, the Pyramide boat, put it about a 25 to 30 minute walk from Pointe aux Piments along the coast, or around 15 minutes on a bus heading towards Grand Baie. By taxi or hotel transfer it is a few minutes. At 5:30 in the morning nobody walks, so ask the captain about pickup when you book.
What a morning on the water looks like
Fishing boats on this coast leave early because the sea is at its calmest before the trade wind builds. The listings say it plainly:
- Flying Kiss starts at 5:30 in the morning and is back at 12:00.
- Baywatch, in Trou-aux-Biches, starts at 6:00 and is back around midday.
- Fishing on Ivan runs trips of 4 to 9 hours depending on what you target.
The first part of the trip is the run out through the lagoon and the reef pass. Outside the reef the water drops away quickly, and the crew set lures out on outriggers and troll the drop off. A typical morning is spent trolling, watching the rods, and changing course when birds show where bait fish are. If you are new to this, our guide to the best time of day for a fishing trip in Mauritius explains why the early start matters so much.
The afternoon is yours. That is the practical appeal for a hotel guest: you fish the best hours and are back for a late lunch by the pool.
What you can catch off the north-west coast
The boats here fish the same deep water outside the reef, so the target list is similar from boat to boat:
| Species | When it is best | Which listings name it |
|---|---|---|
| Dorado (mahi mahi) | Warm months, roughly November to March | Flying Kiss, Fishing on Ivan |
| Blue marlin | Warm months, roughly November to March | Flying Kiss, Pyramide, Fishing on Ivan |
| Tuna | Through the year, by run | Flying Kiss, Pyramide, Fishing on Ivan |
| Wahoo | Cooler months | Pyramide, Fishing on Ivan |
| Trevally | Through the year | Pyramide (bluefin trevally), Fishing on Ivan |
The season windows are broad because fish move with water temperature and bait, not the calendar. For the month by month detail see dorado fishing in Mauritius, blue marlin fishing in Mauritius and our Mauritius fishing seasons guide.
Picking a boat for your group
The boats on this coast differ more in size and style than in the fish they chase. Match the boat to your group first.
A bigger group or mixed family. Flying Kiss takes up to 12 guests and its listing shows a toilet and a shower on board, and that the crew clean and fillet the catch. That matters on a six and a half hour morning with non-anglers aboard. Fishing on Ivan is a 36 foot boat for up to 6 anglers with a toilet, an ice box and a fighting chair, and its captain says children are welcome. See also our guide to a fishing trip in Mauritius with kids.
A couple or a small group of keen anglers. Pyramide is a 26 foot boat run by skipper Mike Seblin and his brother Hansley, with outriggers, a fighting chair and a live bait pump. The listing text says up to four guests, and that rods, licences, soft drinks and snacks are provided. La Rochelle Fishing Charters takes up to four guests and its crew have fished the French big game championship.
Want to try more than trolling? Fishing on Ivan lists bottom fishing, drift fishing, jigging and popping as well as trolling, so tell the captain before the day if you want a session on light tackle rather than a morning of waiting on the big rods.
Who keeps the fish
On most Mauritius charters the catch belongs to the boat, and guests take a share for dinner. Fishing on Ivan says you share the catch with the crew. The full picture, and what to settle with the captain before the trip, is in our guide to who keeps the fish on a Mauritius fishing charter.
Before you book
- Ask where you meet the boat. Pointe aux Piments, Trou-aux-Biches or a hotel pickup. Get the exact spot and time in writing in the chat.
- Check what is included. Rods and tackle, licence, drinks, snacks or lunch. The listings differ, and the listing is where the current terms live.
- Tell the captain who is coming. Ages, how many will actually fish, anyone prone to seasickness. It decides whether a small fast boat or a bigger one with a toilet suits you.
- Agree the catch. Ask how much you can take back to the hotel, or whether you want to release a billfish.
- Keep a spare morning. If the wind is up on your booked day, a flexible date saves the trip.
