Fish gather where the bottom changes. A bank rising out of deeper water pushes the tide up and over it, and rough ground full of rock and weed holds crabs, small fish and everything that eats them. The skipper finds the mark on the sounder and either anchors up tide of it or drifts across it again and again, while you fish baits or lures close to the bottom. Expect to lose some tackle in the rocks: that is the price of fishing where the fish are. Tide and wind matter a lot, because a drift that is too fast drags the baits off the ground.
Plymouth and the Kent coast

Is rough ground fishing suitable for beginners?
Yes. Bottom fishing over a mark is mostly about feeling for the bite, and the skipper rigs the gear and shows you how. Jigging is more tiring. A shared boat such as Fishing with Andy, where you can book one seat, is an easy way to try it.
What should I bring?
In the UK, warm and waterproof layers even in summer, sun protection and enough food for a long day. Ask the skipper what you may keep and bring a cool bag if you hope to take fish home.
