Calmest Month for a Fishing Trip in Málaga: What 40 Years of Buoy Data Say

If you want the calmest sea for a fishing trip off Málaga, go between June and November. The coastal wave buoy that Spain’s port authority, Puertos del Estado, has run off Málaga since 1985 shows that in summer and autumn the sea is under half a metre about 79% of the time, and over one metre only 1% to 4% of the time. Winter and spring are the rough seasons: the sea tops one metre around 10% to 12% of the time. Whatever month you pick, book a morning trip and keep a spare day.

The short answer

There is no single “calm month” in the record, because the buoy report groups the data by season, not by month. What it does show clearly is a calm half of the year and a rougher half:

Season Sea under 0.5 m 0.5 to 1 m Over 1 m
Summer (June to August) 78.7% 20.1% 1.2%
Autumn (September to November) 79.0% 16.7% 4.3%
Winter (December to February) 69.9% 18.2% 11.9%
Spring (March to May) 68.2% 22.5% 9.3%
Whole year 74.0% 19.4% 6.6%

Source: Puertos del Estado, mean wave climate report for the Málaga coastal buoy (36.658 N, 4.415 W, 15 m depth), data from November 1985 to March 2025. Heights are significant wave height, the average of the highest third of the waves.

So if calm water matters more to you than anything else (a first trip, children on board, a guest who gets seasick), aim for June to early November. Summer is the steadiest. Autumn is almost as calm on most days, but its rough days are rougher, so a spare day matters more in November than in July.

Why the numbers matter more than the beach

The sea off the Costa del Sol often looks flat from a sunbed. That is not the same thing as a comfortable morning on a 26 ft boat a few miles out. A sea under half a metre is the kind of water where a beginner can stand at the rail, bait a hook and watch the rod tip without holding on. Between half a metre and one metre most anglers are still fine, but someone prone to seasickness will feel it, especially on a drift or at anchor over a reef. Over one metre, small charter boats start to think twice, and that is usually where a skipper moves a trip.

That is why the “over 1 m” column is the one to watch. In summer the sea is over a metre about 1% of the time. In winter it is more than 10% of the time.

The morning rule

Every boat in Málaga province on Reelzy has its trips set to leave at 08:00, and there is a good reason for it. On this coast the wind usually builds through the day, and the afternoon sea is often livelier than the morning one, whichever wind is blowing. Locals talk about two winds:

  • Levante, the easterly, which funnels through the Strait of Gibraltar and can blow hard for days, especially in summer.
  • Poniente, the westerly, which comes in from the Atlantic side and often brings a cooler, choppier sea.

You do not need to forecast them yourself. What you need is to start early and to choose a trip length that gets you back before the breeze fills in if you are worried about the sea. The Marbella boats on Reelzy offer short trips as well as full days:

Boat Port Trip lengths offered
La Faeton Blue Marlin Puerto Deportivo Virgen del Carmen, Marbella 2 to 10 hours, including 6 and 8 hour trolling days
La Starfisher Puerto Pesquero La Bajadilla, Marbella 3 to 9 hours
Blue Tide Marbella Puerto Pesquero La Bajadilla, Marbella 3 to 8 hours

From each boat’s trip settings on Reelzy, October 2026. All three are private charters: you book the whole boat.

A three or four hour morning trip in summer or autumn is the calmest fishing you can book on this coast.

Month by month: what to expect on the water

Reading the seasons against what the boats fish for gives a practical calendar:

  • June to August. The steadiest sea of the year. Mornings are often glassy, the water is warm and the days are long. The catch is a summer mix of reef fish and pelagics; our month by month guide to fishing off Málaga has the detail. The trade-off is heat and busy ports, so an early start is doubly worth it.
  • September and October. As calm as summer on most days, with warm water, quieter marinas and some of the best mixed fishing of the year. For most visitors this is the sweet spot: calm, comfortable and productive.
  • November. Still in the calm half of the record, but the first proper autumn blows arrive. Book with a spare day.
  • December to February. The roughest stretch. Plenty of days are fine, and a calm winter morning can give good reef fishing, but the sea is over a metre about 12% of the time. Flexible dates are a must.
  • March to May. Spring has the lowest share of flat-calm days in the record. Lovely weather on land, often a lumpy sea. If spring is your only window, keep the trip short and the dates open.

If someone in the group gets seasick

Calm months reduce the risk; they do not remove it. A few things make a real difference:

  1. Book the morning, not the afternoon. Every listing here starts at 08:00, so this is mostly about not choosing a long day if you are worried.
  2. Pick a shorter trip. Two to four hours on a calm summer morning is a very different experience from ten hours on a winter day.
  3. Tell the skipper when you book. A skipper who knows can choose a sheltered stretch of coast and avoid long drifts in a swell.
  4. Take the tablet the evening before and again in the morning, as the packet says, eat a light breakfast and stay in the fresh air looking at the horizon.

What happens if the weather is bad on the day

The skipper makes the call, usually the evening before or at the marina in the morning. On Reelzy a weather cancellation is not a guest cancellation: when the captain calls the trip off because conditions are unsafe, you get back everything you paid online or move the trip to a new date at no extra cost. If the skipper asks you to cancel because of the weather, do not press the cancel button yourself; write to Reelzy support in the chat first. The details are in our cancellation policies.

For your own planning, the official coastal forecast for the Málaga coast comes from AEMET, Spain’s state weather agency, and Puertos del Estado publishes wave forecasts for the same waters. Look at them a few days out with the skipper’s view in mind: a forecast that is fine for the beach can still mean a bumpy ride on a small boat.

A note on Marbella versus Málaga

The buoy sits off Málaga, and the three boats above sail from Marbella, about 50 km west along the same coast. The seasonal pattern is the same along this stretch, but on a given day the sea off Marbella can be a little calmer or a little rougher than off Málaga, depending on the wind direction. That is one more reason to ask the skipper rather than trust a generic forecast.

Questions to send the skipper before you book

  1. Which way does the wind usually blow at this time of year, and how does that change where you fish?
  2. If the sea is up on our date, do you prefer to move the trip or to fish closer in?
  3. What trip length do you suggest for someone worried about seasickness?
  4. Is there shade and a toilet on board?

Ready to book?

For the calmest sea, pick a date between June and early November, book a morning trip and leave a spare day in your holiday. Start with Blue Tide Marbella or La Starfisher for a short morning, or La Faeton Blue Marlin for a bigger group or a longer trolling day. Or see every boat on the Málaga charters page and send the skipper the four questions above.
