Book a morning trip from Trou-aux-Biches, Grand Baie or Rivière Noire, tell the captain what you would like to catch, and keep a spare day in your holiday in case the sea says no.

This guide is for anyone whose Mauritius holiday falls in the European summer, families on school holidays included, who wonders whether a fishing trip makes sense in what the island calls winter.

What “winter” means in Mauritius

Mauritius is in the southern hemisphere, so its seasons run opposite to Europe’s. The cool season is roughly June to September, and the warm season is roughly November to April. Winter here is not cold in any European sense: it is a mild, sunny holiday season with fresher mornings and evenings.

Two things change for anglers:

The south-east trade wind blows harder and more often. It is the single biggest factor in whether an offshore trip goes ahead and how comfortable it is.

The days are shorter. In June and July the sun rises closer to seven in the morning, compared with about half past five in December. Boats follow the light, so a 6:00 departure in July is a dawn start.

What you can catch from June to August

The fish do not leave in winter. The mix changes. Our Mauritius fishing seasons guide has the full calendar, and the winter picture looks like this:

Wahoo are the classic cool season fish, from about June to September. They are long, fast predators caught trolling lures at speed, and one of the best eating fish in the ocean.

Giant trevally live on the reef edges all year, and popping trips run in winter whenever the sea allows. Our seasons guide puts their peak in the warmer months, so in winter ask the captain how the GT have been biting before you book a dedicated popping day. Popping is hard, physical fishing, and our guide to GT fishing in Mauritius explains what a popping day involves.

Yellowfin tuna are caught for most of the year, and the strongest run is usually from March to July, so June and early July still sit in it.

Bottom fishing and reef fishing over the drop offs are not tied to a season in the way marlin are, and they are often the backup when the open sea is lumpy.

What you mostly give up:

Blue marlin are at their best from about November to February. From May to September they are rarely the target, so a winter trip is not the one for a marlin you have dreamed about for years.

Mahi mahi are most plentiful in the warm months, roughly November to February. You may still see them, but they are not the winter headline.

If your heart is set on a marlin, come between November and March. If you want a strong, fast fish and a good day out, winter delivers.

The wind decides which coast you fish

The trade wind blows from the south-east. It hits the east and south-east coasts head on and is broken by the island on the west and north-west. In winter that matters more than at any other time of year.

North-west: Trou-aux-Biches and Grand Baie

The north-west is the most sheltered base in winter, and it is where most boats on Reelzy are. From Trou-aux-Biches, Fishing on Ivan runs trips of 4 to 9 hours on a 36 foot boat for up to 6 anglers, with a toilet on board, and lists wahoo, tuna and trevally among its targets “depending on the time of year and weather conditions”. Captain Sebastian builds the trip around what you ask for, so a winter wahoo morning is the right request. Pyramide, run by Skipper Mike and his brother Hansley for up to 4 guests, fishes inshore and offshore with trolling, jigging, popping, drift and bottom fishing, and lists wahoo and trevally too. Our Trou-aux-Biches fishing trip guide covers a day from that jetty.

A little further north, Grand Baie has Last Cast, a small group boat for 2 to 4 people that fishes tuna schools and FADs and offers half day, full day and custom trips. The captain promises a Plan B, C or D, and that flexibility is exactly what you want on a breezy winter morning.

West: Rivière Noire

On the west coast, Rivière Noire (Black River) also sits in the lee of the island. The Big Game Fishing trip there goes out with two skippers and targets large tunas, including yellowfin and bigeye, as well as marlin and sailfish. In winter, tuna is the realistic headline.

South-east: Mahebourg

The Mahebourg coast faces the trade wind. From June to September the sea outside the reef can be rough, and offshore plans may change on the day. The upside is the biggest lagoon on the island, which usually stays fishable: the Small Game Fishing trip fishes inside it with light tackle, casting, light trolling and bottom fishing. The GT popping trip from the same base says plainly that offshore fishing is subject to the weather. If you are staying in the south-east in winter, the lagoon trip is the safe bet, and our Mahebourg lagoon fishing guide explains how it works.

Book the morning

In every season the morning is the calmest part of the day in Mauritius: the wind builds through late morning into the afternoon. In winter, when the wind is stronger, that pattern matters even more. Boats such as Flying Kiss in Pointe aux Piments leave at 5:30 and are back at noon for that reason. Our guide to the best time of day for a fishing trip in Mauritius goes through the reasons in detail.

A sunset or afternoon trip can still be a lovely few hours, especially inside a lagoon. For wahoo, tuna or GT, go early.

Practical tips for a winter trip

Keep a spare day. If the captain calls a trip off because of the sea, a free day later in the holiday lets you move it rather than lose it. Ask in the listing chat what happens if the weather stops the trip on your date.

Message the evening before. Captains know what the wind is doing and whether the offshore run is on. Ask them, and listen if they suggest the lagoon instead.

Bring a layer. A dawn ride out on a fast boat into a fresh trade wind feels cooler than the beach at noon. A light windproof jacket or fleece earns its place in the bag. Our list of what to bring on a Mauritius fishing charter covers the rest.

Think about seasickness. A breezy day means more swell outside the reef. If anyone in your group is prone to it, read our guide to seasickness on a Mauritius fishing trip and take something before you leave the hotel, not once you feel bad.

Families: choose sheltered water. With children, a shorter trip from the north-west or a lagoon trip makes a better first outing than a full offshore day. See our Mauritius fishing trip with kids guide.

Ask who keeps the fish. Rules differ from boat to boat. Fishing on Ivan shares the catch with the crew. Check before you book, and see our guide on who keeps the fish on a Mauritius fishing charter.

What to ask the captain before you book

Send a short message through the listing chat. Useful questions for a winter date:

What have you been catching in the last couple of weeks?

Is wahoo, tuna or GT the realistic target on my dates?

What time do we leave, and where exactly do we meet?

If the sea is too rough offshore, do you fish inside the reef instead, or move the trip?

Is there a toilet and shade on board? (It matters on a longer trip.)

A captain who answers these clearly is a captain who will look after you on a windy morning.

So, is winter a good time?

For most visitors, yes. June to August is wahoo season, yellowfin are still about, GT can still be popped on calmer days, and the north-west and west coasts stay fishable on most mornings. It is the wrong time for blue marlin, and you should expect the odd day when the trade wind keeps the boats in. Pick a morning trip from a sheltered base, keep a spare day and ask the captain what is biting.

Browse the boats on our Mauritius fishing charters page, compare trip lengths and what each captain targets, and message the one that fits your dates.

Cover: "Capture d’un thon albacore pour marquage électronique (Ifremer 00699-81068 – 33229)" by Marc Taquet, CC BY 4.0, edited (colour, retouching).

Visiting Mauritius in the southern winter?
