Most charter boats leave between about 5:30 and 7:00 and are back around midday, because the sea is usually at its calmest before the trade wind picks up and the light around dawn is when offshore fish feed most actively. An afternoon or sunset trip can still be a good day out, especially inside the lagoon, but if catching fish is the point and you can face the alarm, book the morning.

Why the boats leave so early

Look at the trip times on Mauritius listings and a pattern appears. Baywatch in Trou-aux-Biches starts at 6 in the morning and is back around 12. Flying Kiss in Pointe aux Piments leaves at 5:30 and returns at noon. That is not the captains being keen for the sake of it. There are three practical reasons.

The wind. Mauritius sits in the south-east trade winds. On most days the morning is the quietest part of the day, and the breeze builds through late morning into the afternoon. A flatter sea means a more comfortable ride out past the reef, an easier time for anyone prone to seasickness, and lures that run properly behind the boat.

The light. Dawn and the first hours after it are a feeding window for pelagic fish such as mahi mahi, tuna and wahoo. Bait fish move, predators follow, and birds working the surface are easier to spot in low sun.

The heat. Out on the open Indian Ocean there is little shade. Six hours from dawn to midday is far kinder to you, and to any fish you plan to keep, than six hours from noon to sunset.

What time is dawn in Mauritius?

It depends on the month, and it shifts by more than an hour across the year. In the southern summer, around December, the sun is up at roughly half past five. In the southern winter, around June and July, it rises closer to seven. Boats tend to follow the light, so a 6:00 departure in July is a dawn start, while in December the same boat may want you at the jetty earlier.

Plan the transfer the night before. Taxis at five in the morning need booking, and the exact meeting point on Reelzy is sent once the booking is confirmed.

Morning, afternoon or sunset: how they compare

Trip time

Typical hours

Sea state

Best for

Early morning

about 5:30 or 6:00 to 12:00

usually the calmest of the day

big game and offshore trolling, serious anglers, anyone wary of seasickness

Late morning or midday

starts around 9:00 or 10:00

wind building

lagoon and reef fishing, families who will not do an early start

Afternoon

from about 13:00

often the windiest, more chop outside the reef

short lagoon trips, a relaxed couple of hours on the water

Sunset

the last hours of daylight

wind often easing again

a relaxed trip with some fishing, couples, a last evening

These are patterns, not guarantees. Some days the morning is rough and the afternoon glassy, and a good captain will say so when you message.

When the answer changes

Offshore and big game: go early

If you want marlin, tuna, wahoo or mahi mahi, the morning is the trip to book. Boats such as Fishing on Ivan, which runs trips of 4 to 9 hours out of Trou-aux-Biches and trolls for mahi mahi, wahoo and tuna further out, or the Full Day Big Game trip from Grand Baie, which runs for 9 hours, need the cooler and calmer part of the day to cover water. A full day naturally starts at dawn as well.

Lagoon and light tackle: the clock matters less

Inside the reef the water stays sheltered for most of the day, so the time matters much less. The Small Game Fishing trip in Mahebourg, a light tackle trip in the largest lagoon on the island, works later in the morning too. This is where a family with young children, who are not going to be happy at the jetty at 5:30, can still have a great few hours. We cover lagoon trips for families in a Mauritius fishing trip with kids.

Sunset trips: a different kind of day

A few boats offer sunset trips. Last Cast in Grand Baie lists half-day, full-day and sunset options, and can tailor a trip around what you ask for. Be honest with yourself about what you want from it. A sunset trip is short, the light goes fast once the sun touches the horizon in the tropics, and the fishing is part of the evening rather than the whole point. It is a lovely last night of a holiday. It is not the trip to book if your heart is set on a marlin.

The coast you fish from

The south-east trade wind blows onshore on the east and south-east coasts and is broken by the island on the west and north-west. That is one reason the largest group of boats on Reelzy is in Trou-aux-Biches on the north-west coast: a sheltered start makes a morning trip comfortable on more days of the year. On a windy day in the cooler months, a north-west boat can often still fish when the east coast is choppy.

The season changes the time too

The time of day and the time of year work together. In the southern winter, roughly June to August, the trade wind is at its strongest, so the calm morning window matters even more and an afternoon outside the reef can be rough. In the summer months, roughly November to March, mornings are hot and bright early, and that is also when billfish and mahi mahi are at their best around the island. Wahoo tend to fish better in the cooler months. Our month by month view is in the Mauritius fishing seasons guide.

What to ask the captain

You do not need to guess. When you message a captain on Reelzy, ask:

What time do we leave and where do we meet? Ask for the time in local time and whether it changes with the month.

What is the forecast for that morning? If the wind is up, would they move the day, or fish the lagoon instead?

Is an afternoon or sunset trip possible? Some boats do it on request even when the listing only shows a morning trip.

What fish are realistic at that time of day this month? A straight answer here tells you a lot about the crew.

What happens if the weather turns? On Reelzy, if the captain cancels for unsafe conditions you get a full refund or a free reschedule.

Before you book

Set the alarm, not the expectation. An early start gives you the best chance, but fish do not read timetables. A good morning is a calm sea, a few strikes and a crew who works hard for them.

Eat something. A light breakfast before a dawn start helps a great deal with seasickness. If you are prone to it, read our seasickness guide for Mauritius before you go, and if you use a tablet, take it as the pack says, before you board rather than once you feel ill.

Bring a layer. It can be surprisingly cool on the water at 5:30 in July. By ten you will want sun cover, a hat and plenty of water.

Keep the afternoon free. A trip that is back by noon leaves time for lunch, a nap and the beach, which is the other good reason to go early.

Ready to go?

If you can get up early, book a morning trip and let the captain choose where to fish on the day. Browse the fishing charters in Mauritius, check the departure time on each listing, and message the captain with your dates, your group and what you hope to catch before you book.

Why most Mauritius fishing boats leave at dawn, when an afternoon or sunset trip makes sense, and how wind, season and target fish change the answer.

[133,8
208,78,115,274,117
post-796","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-guides","category-mauritius-fishing","tag-big-game","tag-grand-baie","tag-mauritius","tag-planning","tag-trou-aux-biches
["GET
