For most families that means a private boat out of Marbella, a three or four hour morning on the reefs with light tackle, and a date between June and early November when the sea is at its calmest. All three Costa del Sol boats on Reelzy mark children as welcome, and because each one is a private charter, the whole deck is yours: no strangers waiting while your seven year old untangles a line.

Where it goes wrong is usually not the fishing. It is a long day in the heat, a choppy afternoon sea, a boat with no shade or no toilet, or a big-game trip where a child sits for hours waiting for one strike that may never come. The rest of this guide is about avoiding those.

Match the trip to the age, not the other way round

Under five or six, think of the trip as a boat outing with some fishing in it. Short is everything. Two or three hours from the harbour, a rod an adult holds with them, and the excitement of something wriggling over the side is plenty. Bring snacks they already like and a favourite toy; the sea itself will do the rest for about an hour.

From around six to eleven, children can genuinely fish. What keeps them interested is frequent bites, and on this coast that means bottom fishing or drifting over a reef rather than trolling offshore. Small sea bream, rockfish and the odd dentex come up regularly when the skipper finds the right ground, and a child who catches six small fish has a better morning than an adult who catches one big one. Light rods matter here: a child can feel a small fish on light tackle, and a heavy trolling rod in a stern holder is something they can only watch.

Teenagers are a different story. A twelve or fourteen year old who already enjoys fishing may be the one asking for a longer trolling trip, and that can be a great day out. Just be realistic about tuna. Bluefin are a serious, regulated fish in the Strait and the western Mediterranean, the fights are long and heavy, and a day can pass with no bites at all. If your teenager is set on it, talk to the skipper first about what a realistic catch is in your month.

The three Marbella boats that take children

All three boats sail from Marbella, about 50 km west of Málaga city along the coast road, and their trips are set to leave at 08:00.

Blue Tide Marbella is the one that says it most clearly: its own description lists families first among the groups it is built for. It is a 26 to 40 ft sportfishing boat for up to nine guests, leaving from Puerto Pesquero La Bajadilla, with a toilet, a shower and a flybridge on board. Rods, tackle, bait, cold drinks, insurance and permits are included, and it fishes bottom, drift and trolling depending on the season, with trips of three to eight hours. Guests keep their catch, and the catch can be cleaned and filleted on board.

La Starfisher is the smaller boat, a cabin cruiser of 15 to 25 ft for up to eight, also from La Bajadilla. Its skipper, Daniel, has more than 20 years on the Marbella coast, and the trip is built around light tackle over reefs, which the listing marks as suited to beginners and relaxed trips. There is a toilet, a fridge, snacks and drinks, and the fishing licence is included. Trips run three to nine hours. One thing to check: on this boat the crew keeps the catch, so if your child wants to take a fish back to the apartment, ask in the chat before you book.

La Faeton Blue Marlin is the big one, 26 to 40 ft with a flybridge, a kitchen and a toilet, for up to twelve guests, sailing from Puerto Deportivo Virgen del Carmen. Same skipper as La Starfisher. It is a bluefin tuna boat at heart, with trolling, drifting and jigging, so it suits a large family group, a grandparents-and-cousins day, or teenagers who want the bigger fish. Its trips run from two hours up to ten. A two hour slot on a boat this size is a good way to give small children a taste without committing the whole morning.

You can see all of them, and any new boats, on the Marbella charters page or the wider Málaga charters page.

Why the morning and the month matter more with kids

On this coast the wind usually builds through the day, so the sea at 08:00 is often flatter than the sea at 14:00. With children that is the whole game: a calm first hour, fish coming up, back in the marina before lunch and before the heat. The Puertos del Estado buoy off Málaga, which has been recording waves since 1985, shows summer and autumn as the calmest seasons, with the sea under half a metre about 79% of the time; winter and spring are lumpier. We went through those numbers in our guide to the calmest month for a fishing trip in Málaga.

Summer brings its own problem, which is the sun. By late morning in July the deck of a white boat is hot, and there is very little shade on an open sportfisher. Ask where the shade is. On the bigger boats it is usually the cabin or the space under the flybridge.

Keep a spare day in the holiday if you can. If the skipper calls the trip off because the sea is unsafe, Reelzy refunds what you paid online or moves the trip at no extra cost, but a child who has been promised a boat is easier to handle with a new date already in hand. The rules are in our cancellation policies.

Licences, life jackets and the safety briefing

Your children do not need a fishing licence on a charter that has one. In Andalusia, a company running a charter fishing boat can hold a recreational licence that covers everyone who books the trip, under the Junta de Andalucía’s Decreto 205/2023, so nobody in the family has to apply for anything. Two of the three Marbella boats list the licence as included; on the third, it costs nothing to ask the skipper to confirm. If you later fish from the shore on your own, Andalusian rules are different for under 14s, who may fish only alongside a licensed adult and with written permission from a parent; our Spanish fishing licence guide covers that case.

Before departure the skipper gives a safety briefing on life jackets and what to do in an emergency. With small children, ask before the day whether the boat carries a life jacket in your child’s size, or whether you should bring your own. A child’s jacket has to fit their weight to work, and an adult one on a five year old is no use. Check the fit on the pontoon, not once you are under way.

Small things that make or break the morning

Most of what parents forget is ordinary. Here is what we would pack for a child on a Marbella morning trip:

a hat that ties under the chin, sunglasses and high-factor sun cream, put on before leaving the apartment

a light long-sleeved top for the ride out, which is cooler than the harbour

trainers or deck shoes with soft soles, never flip-flops on a wet deck

water and plain snacks, a dry change of clothes and a small towel

a seasickness remedy suitable for their age, if they are prone to it, taken as the packet says before the trip

Tell the skipper the children’s ages when you book. A skipper who knows there is a six year old on board will pick a closer, more sheltered stretch of reef and keep the first fish coming quickly. For first-timers of any age, our beginner’s guide to a fishing trip from Málaga walks through what happens on the day.

Keeping a fish, or putting it back

Children usually want two things: to hold the fish, and to show someone. Ask the skipper to help them hold it properly for a quick photo, then decide together whether it goes back. On Blue Tide Marbella and La Faeton you keep what you catch, and a skipper who cleans the fish on board saves you a messy job in a holiday flat kitchen. Releasing a fish is also a good lesson in itself, and most skippers are happy to show a child how to wet their hands and slip it back over the side.

If you are ready to book, message the skipper of Blue Tide Marbella or La Starfisher with your children’s ages and your dates, ask for a three or four hour morning on the reefs, and ask about shade and a child-size life jacket in the same message.

FAQ

Can children go on a fishing trip in Málaga or Marbella? Yes.
