The catch is the weather. Winter is the season of the gregale, so book a boat that fishes all year, keep a spare day, and expect the skipper to make the call on the morning.

The short answer

If you are in Malta for a winter break, Christmas with family or a January escape from the cold up north, a reef or jigging trip is the one to book. Big game tuna fishing is a late spring and summer thing, and swordfish are closed from 1 January to 31 March. What winter does well is bottom fishing and jigging for the reef predators, plus relaxed squid fishing after dark.

You need no personal fishing licence on a charter in Malta. The boat holds the permits it needs, as our Malta fishing seasons guide explains in detail.

What you can catch in Malta from December to February

Here is what is realistic for a visiting angler in the winter months, based on the season data in our seasons guide and on what the skippers themselves say on their listings.

Dentex (dentiċi). The winter fish. Dentex hold over rocky ground, drop offs and wrecks, and local angling sources rate them as often at their best in winter. They are strong, good to eat, and usually taken jigging or with live bait.

Amberjack (aċċjola). Amberjack are at their peak in the summer heat, but they stay on the deep reefs well into winter, roughly until February. A winter amberjack is still a hard fight. Our page on amberjack fishing in Malta covers how the boats fish for them.

Squid and cuttlefish. Squid fishing in Malta is a night job from about October to March, with small jigs under lights. It is light tackle, relaxed and a good choice for families and first timers. Malta sets minimum sizes of 100 mm for squid and 75 mm for cuttlefish, and the skipper will measure.

Grouper. Grouper live on the reefs all year. The minimum size is 45 cm, so many go back.

Lampuki, in December only. Lampuki (mahi mahi) open on 15 August and the season runs to 31 December. The best of it is late August to November, so a December trip catches the tail end at most. Do not plan a January holiday around them.

Bonito, from February. Bonito start to show from about February, so late winter can add them to a mixed day.

What is out of season. Bluefin tuna pass the islands from late spring into July, and albacore from mid May to mid July. Swordfish are closed from 1 January to 31 March under EU rules, so a swordfish trip advertised for February is not a swordfish trip.

The weather: why winter needs a spare day

Malta’s winter is mild on land, but the sea is a different story. The wind that matters most is the gregale, the strong north-east wind Maltese fishermen respect above all others. It blows mainly from autumn to early spring and sends a heavy swell into the north-east facing bays and harbours: St Paul’s Bay, Marsamxett and the Grand Harbour. A strong gregale day is the classic cancellation, and the swell can stay up for a day after the wind drops.

The majjistral, from the north-west, blows all year. A moderate one is a normal fishing day, and when it blows hard the south-east coast around Marsascala usually sits in its lee.

Three practical rules follow:

Book early in your stay. If the first date is blown out, you still have days to move it.

Keep a spare morning. From October to March the gregale gives the most weather days of the year.

Ask where the boat launches. On a windy week, a boat on the sheltered side of the island, or one that can run around to it, is the one that goes out.

If the skipper cancels for weather, you are not out of pocket. On Reelzy you get a full refund of what you paid online or a new date at no extra cost, as our guide to a fishing trip cancelled for bad weather in Malta explains. Do not press cancel yourself if the skipper suggests it: write to support first.

Which boats fish in winter

Not every boat runs all year, so check before you plan. These Malta boats on Reelzy say things on their own pages that matter in winter:

Fishingmalta in Ta’ Xbiex says its trips run all year round, on a 33 foot Targa with GPS, a fishfinder, a toilet and an ice box, for up to eight anglers. Skippers Chris and Daryl fish the reefs and ledges for table fish and troll further out, and the distance they travel depends on the fish, the weather and the trip. They can also head to the other side of the island, which is the flexibility you want on a windy week.

Adele II, an Axopar 37 from Floriana for up to 11, has a cabin whose double air conditioning, the owner says, keeps you warm on rough and cold days. On a grey January morning that counts for a lot.

Mister Fish Charters works from Marsascala, on the south-east coast that sits in the lee of a strong majjistral. Trips are built around the group, from family outings inshore to jigging and bottom fishing on the reefs, for up to four.

Aquaholic is Laguna II in St Paul’s Bay with Captain Paul, a commercial fisherman, for groups of up to 12. Tell him what you hope to catch and he will give you honest expectations for the season, which in winter is exactly what you need.

Fish in deep waters is a Gozo skipper with 30 years of deep sea fishing behind him, for up to four. If you are staying on Gozo, fishing from that side saves the ferry; our Gozo fishing trip guide covers the day.

See every boat on the islands in Malta fishing charters, and message the skipper before you book to ask whether they are running on your dates.

Which trip to book in winter

For a serious angler: a jigging or bottom fishing day. Winter is the time for jigging in Malta, working metal jigs over deep reef edges for dentex and amberjack. It is physical and the grounds are deep, so a longer trip gives the skipper time to try several marks if the first is quiet.

For a family or a first timer: a shorter reef trip or squid at night. A half day on a calm morning, or a night out for squid under the lights, keeps it easy. Our Malta fishing trip for beginners explains what the day looks like.

For a mixed group: say so when you book. Many skippers will plan a day that mixes bottom fishing for table fish with a little jigging, so the keen angler and the curious partner both get something out of it.

What to wear and bring

Winter in Malta means mild days but a cold wind on the water, especially on the run out. Bring:

Layers and a windproof jacket. It is colder at sea than on the promenade, and colder still at speed.

Something waterproof. Spray comes over the bow on a lumpy day.

Non slip shoes, a hat and sunglasses. The winter sun is low and bright on the water.

Seasickness tablets, taken before you leave, if you are prone to it. A winter swell is longer and heavier than the summer chop.

A cool box in the car if the skipper lets you keep fish. Ask first, and read our guide on keeping your fish on a Malta charter for the rules.

Questions to ask the skipper before you book

Do you run trips in December, January and February, and from which port?

What do you target in winter: dentex, amberjack, squid, mixed reef fishing?

Which wind makes you cancel, and can we fish the sheltered side if the open water is rough?

How long should the trip be for what we want to catch?

Is there a cabin or shelter on board?

A skipper who answers these clearly will give you a good winter day. You can ask all of them in the chat on any listing before you pay.

Ready to plan a winter trip?

Pick a boat that fishes all year in Malta, book early in your stay, and leave a spare morning for the gregale. Winter in Malta is quiet, the harbours are local again, and the reef fish are at their best.

FAQ

Can you go fishing in Malta in December and January? Yes. Several charters run all year. Winter is the season for reef fishing and jigging for dentex and amberjack, and for squid fishing at night. Big game tuna is a summer fishery.

What fish can you catch in Malta in winter? Dentex, which are often at their best in winter, amberjack on the deep reefs until about February, grouper all year, squid and cuttlefish at night, the last lampuki in December and bonito from February.

Is the sea too rough for fishing in Malta in winter? Not every day, but winter has the most weather days because of the gregale, a strong north-east wind. Keep a spare day, and if the skipper cancels for safety you get a full refund or a new date.

Can you fish for swordfish in Malta in winter? Not from January to March.
